The creative talent of those living with mental illness should be encouraged, cultivated and celebrated. “Misunderstood Minds” is an event showcasing the creative abilities of young adults, ages 14-21, touched by mental disorders. The event is to be held at Barnes & Noble, 567 N. Stephanie on October 6th, from 9am to 6pm.
Creative writing, poetry and art will be display for public viewing. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss their work with attendees and conduct readings throughout the day. T he “Misunderstood Minds” event hopes to serve as local extension to kick off National “Mental Illness Awareness Week”, October 7-13, 2007. Deadline for participation is September 21, 2007. Artists and writers should contact Eileen Ruiz at eileenr@cox.net or 702-580-6146.
Some of the most brilliant minds in history, Van Gogh, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Virgina Woolf all lived with some type of mental disorder. These creative individuals may have felt misunderstood at times in their life. Despite their illness, they’ve made an amazing contribution to society. The creative power of artists with mental illness should be promoted and the stigma associated with mental illness should be abandon.
